At the 2024 Olympics, Caden Cunningham earned a silver medal in taekwondo, while Britain celebrated a milestone by winning their first-ever medal in artistic swimming.

Britain’s Caden Cunningham earned a silver medal in taekwondo after a hard-fought battle against Iran’s Arian Salimi in the men’s +80kg final on the penultimate day of the 2024 Paris Olympics. The 21-year-old from Huddersfield initially led by winning the first round 6-3, but Salimi’s strategic head kick in the second round shifted the momentum, leading to a closely contested final round. In the last 20 seconds, Salimi pulled ahead to claim victory, leaving Cunningham with the silver.

Cunningham’s journey to the final was impressive, as he defeated Cuba’s former double world champion Rafael Alba and the Ivory Coast’s former Olympic champion Cheick Sallah Cisse. This marks a significant milestone in Cunningham’s career, following his World Grand Prix title win in Italy in 2023, along with European Games and European Championships victories.

In other events, Kate Shortman and Izzy Thorpe made history by securing a sensational medal in artistic swimming for Britain. Additionally, Georgia Bell grabbed bronze in the 1500m, while Noah Williams claimed a medal with his last two dives in the 10m platform contest. The day also saw Britain earning double relay bronze medals. However, Cunningham’s teammate Rebecca McGowan narrowly missed out on a podium finish after losing to reigning heavyweight world champion Nafia Kus in the bronze medal match.
