Charles Barkley Criticizes NBA’s Shift to Amazon, Claims It Prioritizes Money Over Fans

Charles Barkley, host of “Inside the NBA,” criticized the NBA’s decision to accept Amazon’s $1.8 billion per year bid over TNT’s matching offer. In an Instagram statement, Barkley accused the NBA of valuing financial gain over fan interests, stating, “It’s a sad day when owners and commissioners choose money over the fans. It just sucks.”

Barkley’s comments followed the NBA’s rejection of Warner Bros. Discovery’s offer, which owns TNT and CNN, to match Amazon’s deal. The decision has led to a potential legal conflict between the NBA and Warner Bros. Discovery. Barkley expressed frustration that TNT’s offer was overlooked, emphasizing that tech companies like Amazon are more willing to pay for future rights.

In a follow-up to the controversy, Barkley revealed he is exploring offers from other networks, including NBC, ESPN, and Prime Video, unless Warner Bros. Discovery can guarantee his contract terms. Barkley criticized the NBA’s strategy, predicting that sports media rights will eventually move entirely to streaming platforms.

Warner Bros. Discovery has challenged the NBA’s decision, stating it has a contractual right to match offers and expressing disappointment at the rejection. The company is pursuing legal action against the NBA to preserve its long-standing partnership.

The NBA’s new 11-year media deal with Amazon, alongside agreements with NBCUniversal and Disney, aims to expand the league’s reach and enhance the fan experience, according to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.
